Job description
At Bristol Myers Squibb, our employees often ask, “Who are you working for?”—a question that fuels collaboration, accountability, and urgency in our work. Our purpose-driven culture inspires us to discover, develop, and deliver innovative medicines to prevail over serious diseases. We offer uniquely interesting and meaningful work, opportunities for growth, and a supportive environment that values inclusion, wellbeing, flexibility, and comprehensive benefits. This is work that transforms the lives of patients, and the careers of those who do it. Our Chemical Process Development group is a team of organic chemists, analytical chemists, and chemical engineers working together to design novel syntheses from raw materials to supply new medicines to patients. Our scientists focus on developing safe, economical, sustainable, and robust processes to support clinical trials and the launch of new medicines across various drug modalities including small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides, and antibody drug conjugates. Our work combines innovative science, data-driven decision-making, and cross-functional collaboration to translate laboratory chemistry into reliable manufacturing processes. The scientific and process knowledge generated through development, scale-up, and manufacturing establishes the process understanding, design parameters, and control strategies needed to support regulatory filings and the delivery of new medicines to patients worldwide. Job Summary: The Kilo Lab Scientist plays a key role in translating laboratory-developed chemical processes into safe, robust, and executable manufacturing processes within the New Brunswick Kilo Lab and beyond. Working hands-on with multidisciplinary Chemical Process Development teams, the scientist is responsible for the preparation, scale-up, and execution of processes supporting the manufacture of GMP active drug substance for pharmaceutical development. The scientist leads and coordinates manufacturing campaign activities, including process design and scale-up, equipment selection and setup, materials planning, process safety evaluation review, recipe development, batch execution, equipment cleaning, process documentation, and post-campaign assessment. The role requires a combination of scientific understanding, practical problem-solving, and mechanical aptitude, with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and environmental compliance. Kilo Lab Scientists execute processes from laboratory scale through 200L and work directly with processing equipment throughout campaign preparation and manufacturing. The Kilo Lab also provides an environment for evaluating and implementing emerging manufacturing technologies and methodologies, giving scientists opportunities to contribute to the advancement of how new novel medicines are scaled and manufactured. Responsibilities: Lead the implementation and scale-up of chemical processes from the development laboratory into the New Brunswick Kilo Lab in support of clinical development and GMP active drug substance manufacturing. Work hands-on with chemists, engineers, analytical scientists, and other cross-functional partners to translate laboratory processes into safe, robust, and executable manufacturing operations. Plan, coordinate, and execute Kilo Lab manufacturing campaigns, including equipment selection and setup, raw material planning, process safety readiness, recipe preparation, batch execution, cleaning, and manufacturing documentation. Apply scientific and engineering principles to identify and resolve technical and operational challenges encountered during process scale-up and manufacturing. Review process safety information and translate identified process requirements and operating boundaries into appropriate manufacturing practices. Monitor and assess process performance during manufacturing and document observations, deviations, learnings, and opportunities for process improvement. Ensure manufacturing activities are conducted in accordance with applicable safety, GMP, environmental, and procedural requirements. Collaborate with development teams before and after campaigns to incorporate scale-up and manufacturing learnings into subsequent process development. Participate in the evaluation and implementation of new equipment, manufacturing technologies, and processing methodologies within the Kilo Lab. Contribute to a collaborative working environment through effective communication, knowledge sharing, and partnership across scientific and engineering disciplines. Required Qualifications: BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific or engineering discipline with 1-3 years of experience.*** Demonstrated ability to apply scientific and technical principles to laboratory, process development, scale-up, or manufacturing activities. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic laboratory and manufacturing environment. Ability and willingness to work hands-on with chemical processing equipment and perform activities associated with setup, operation, and execution of manufacturing processes. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across scientific and engineering disciplines in a matrix environment. Ability to work independently, exercise sound technical judgment, and manage assigned activities with appropriate levels of supervision. Commitment to safe working practices, quality, and regulatory compliance. Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific or engineering discipline.*** Relevant industry experience in laboratory process development, chemical process scale-up, pilot-scale operations, or pharmaceutical/chemical manufacturing.*** Familiarity with chemical processing equipment and unit operations used in synthetic chemical manufacturing. Knowledge of GMP manufacturing principles and process safety practices. Experience translating laboratory procedures into larger-scale manufacturing operations. Experience with emerging or intensified manufacturing technologies, including continuous or flow processing. Ability and interest in applying and expanding technical capabilities across process development and manufacturing, including supporting Development Engineering laboratory activities and Process Engineering activities associated with externally executed manufacturing campaigns . *** The level of the position will be determined based on the selected candidate’s education, relevant experience, and demonstrated capabilities. The responsibilities described above are representative of the role and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and activities associated with the position. We hire for skills and capabilities, not just credentials – if this role excites you, but doesn’t perfectly match your resume, we encourage you to apply anyway. Compensation Overview: New Brunswick - NJ - US: $89,660 - $108,644
The starting pay range(s) listed above is for full-time employees (FTE). You may also be eligible for additional discretionary
