Location/Division Specific Information We are a research, development, and production site in Bremen currently with about 500 employees whose “high-end” measurement and analysis instruments (mass spectrometers) are used in research and science worldwide. Our innovative products in the fields of Life Sciences MS and Inorganic MS, as well as Trace Elemental Analysis, are among the leading products globally in their respective markets. Join our collaborative team at Thermo Fisher Scientific as an R&D Lab & Instrumentation Technician, where you will provide hands-on support for R&D laboratory operations and instrumentation. In this role, you will help ensure that analytical instruments, materials, samples, and data acquisition workflows are ready for reliable and reproducible measurements. Working closely with scientists, engineers, and cross-functional teams, you will contribute to efficient laboratory operations, instrument readiness, development activities, and the rollout of new solutions. A day in the Life: The R&D Lab & Instrumentation Technician supports daily laboratory operations by ensuring instruments, materials, and workflows are ready for reliable data generation. This role focuses on routine instrument support, solution preparation, data acquisition assistance, and documentation, enabling scientists and engineers to produce high-quality, reproducible results in a safe and efficient laboratory environment. This is an on-site Bremen role that includes regular work in the R&D lab and, when required, line-side support in production test areas during iterative development rollouts. Instrument Operation & Maintenance Support readiness and uptime of laboratory instrumentation through routine checks, basic troubleshooting, and scheduled maintenance activities. Monitor system performance and document deviations that may impact data quality or reproducibility. Sample Handling & System Support Maintain sample handling systems and associated fluidics or interfaces through routine cleaning, replacement, and verification. Manage waste handling and disposal in accordance with laboratory procedures and safety requirements. Solution Preparation & Laboratory Readiness Prepare routine solutions, standards, blanks, and reagents following established protocols. Maintain an organized and well-stocked laboratory, including consumables, materials, and calibrated tools. Data Acquisition Support Execute routine data acquisition workflows as defined by established protocols or lab books. Set up runs, monitor progress, and ensure correct transfer, naming, and storage of raw data files. Support software rollout verification on lab and production test systems by performing defined manual setup checks, capturing required metadata, and escalating failures quickly. Data & Metadata Management Organize raw data and associated metadata according to defined standards to ensure traceability and reproducibility. Perform basic quality checks to verify data completeness and expected signal behaviour. Document instrument configurations and note deviations from standard setups. Operational & Throughput Support Support laboratory throughput by managing sample queues, loading automated systems, and coordinating instrument availability. Clean and prepare labware and materials suitable for analytical measurements. Safety, Compliance & Documentation Follow laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, and waste disposal procedures. Maintain accurate maintenance, calibration, and operational logs to support compliance and audits. Additional Responsibilities (as needed) Assist with method validation, development studies, or generation of standardized datasets. Support basic data checks or preprocessing using established tools or scripts. Keys to Success: Education Bachelor’s degree in analytical chemistry, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a related scientific field, or equivalent (minimum 3 years) hands-on laboratory experience in a routine analytical chemistry laboratory. Experience Experience working in a laboratory environment following written procedures and safety protocols. Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately document work. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Ability to work on-site in Bremen and follow laboratory and production-area procedures (PPE, chemical hygiene, documentation). Ability to manage routine tasks independently and prioritize work in a shared laboratory setting. Proficiency with basic computer tools (e.g., data entry, file organization, spreadsheets). English fluency.
