Join us, grow with us, and together, let's shape the future of biological discovery. ‎ About the opportunity At QIAGEN Digital Insights (QDI), we develop industry-leading bioinformatics software and curated knowledge bases that help researchers, laboratories, and clinicians transform molecular data into actionable insights. As a Senior Engineer, you will take ownership of building and evolving server-side systems and data-intensive services, primarily using Scala. You will work on distributed systems, APIs, and processing pipelines that support complex clinical and research workflows. This is not a typical CRUD back-end role – the focus is on scalability, correctness, performance, and reliability in a regulated domain. Exposure to Scala, functional programming, or Python is a plus, since parts of our backend ecosystem use these technologies. You will also play a key role in technical decisions, mentoring, and raising back-end engineering standards within the team. Your tasks Design, develop, and enhance scalable backend services and distributed systems using Scala and related technologies Build and evolve APIs, processing pipelines, and platform services that support genomic and biomedical data workflows Drive technical architecture decisions with a focus on scalability, reliability, performance, and maintainability Collaborate closely with Product Management, Frontend Engineering, DevOps, and other cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions Implement automated testing practices and maintain high engineering standards through code reviews and engineering best practices Mentor engineers and contribute to the continuous growth of engineering capabilities within the team Support technical discovery activities, solution design discussions, effort estimations, and feasibility assessments Your profile 5+ years of professional software development experience, with strong expertise developing production-grade applications using Java (Java 8/11/17+) Solid understanding of object-oriented design principles, software architecture patterns, and engineering best practices Experience designing, building, and operating distributed backend systems with a focus on scalability, reliability, and performance Strong experience designing, developing, and consuming REST APIs; exposure to GraphQL is an advantage Experience with concurrency, asynchronous programming, data processing, and backend testing frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito, or similar Hands-on experience working with relational and non-relational databases (SQL and NoSQL) Proficiency with Git-based development workflows, code reviews, and collaborative software engineering practices Nice to have: Experience with functional programming, ideally using Scala, including familiarity with Scala ecosystem tools such as Akka, ZIO, Cats, or similar technologies Working knowledge of Python for scripting, automation, or data processing, alongside experience with event-driven and streaming architectures Exposure to healthcare, biotech, or other regulated software environments, with familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS/GCP), containerised deployments, and CI/CD practices What we offer Bonus/Commission Local benefits Referral Program Volunteer Day Internal Academy ( QIALearn ) Employee Assistance Program Hybrid work (conditional to your role) Our people are the heartbeat of everything we do.
