Data Scientist

Job purpose* The Data Scientist will strengthen Portugal's internal capability in data, advanced analytics and artificial intelligence, translating complex information into actionable insights and scalable solutions that improve decision-making, commercial effectiveness and organisational productivity. The role combines technical expertise with strong business understanding and cross-functional partnership. It will identify high-value use cases, develop and deploy analytical solutions, automate repetitive processes, and accelerate the adoption of data-driven and AI-enabled ways of working across the organisation. Key responsibilities Lead the development and deployment of advanced analytics, AI and data science solutions that support strategic and operational business decision-making. Translate complex data and analytical findings into clear recommendations that improve commercial performance and business outcomes. Partner with Commercial, Medical, Finance and Business Excellence teams to identify, prioritise and shape high-value analytical and AI use cases. Drive adoption of AI-enabled capabilities and data-driven ways of working, supporting stakeholders through experimentation, implementation and change. Develop and automate dashboards, reports and analytical tools that reduce manual effort, improve access to insights and accelerate decision-making. Support omnichannel strategy through customer analytics, segmentation, targeting, Next Best Action and engagement performance measurement. Identify opportunities to simplify business processes through automation, advanced analytics and innovative uses of technology. Evaluate the impact of commercial initiatives and customer engagement activities, providing evidence-based recommendations for continuous improvement. Apply appropriate standards for data quality, integrity, documentation, privacy, governance and responsible use of AI across analytical solutions. Design reliable, reusable and maintainable solutions, while collaborating with regional and global teams to leverage best practices and build organisational capability. A. Educational background Minimum level of education* University degree or equivalent practical experience. Area of specialisation* Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics or another relevant quantitative discipline. Why this level is required The role requires a strong quantitative foundation to develop, evaluate and communicate analytical and AI solutions responsibly. Preferred level of education Postgraduate qualification in a relevant quantitative discipline is advantageous but not essential. B. Job-related experience Relevant professional experience applying analytics, data science or AI to real business problems. Experience translating analytical work into clear recommendations and adopted business solutions. Experience working in a commercial, healthcare, pharmaceutical or similarly regulated environment is advantageous. Experience collaborating with cross-functional and non-technical stakeholders. C. Other job-related skills / background Strong proficiency in analytical programming and data manipulation, preferably using Python and/or R, SQL and modern data visualisation tools. Practical knowledge of descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics, machine learning and statistical modelling. Ability to develop automated reporting, dashboards and scalable analytical workflows. Understanding of data quality, governance, privacy, model documentation and responsible use of AI. Familiarity with cloud-based data and analytics environments is advantageous.
