The Sustainability Manager is responsible for managing and advancing site sustainability programs across energy, water, carbon emissions, waste, recycling, and environmental stewardship. This role develops and implements initiatives that improve environmental performance, reduce resource consumption, and support cost-effective, sustainable site operations. The position partners with Infrastructure & Building Management, Engineering, EHS, Manufacturing, Procurement, Finance, Site Services, and external vendors to identify opportunities, coordinate projects, track sustainability metrics, and support corporate environmental objectives. Responsibilities also include waste reduction and landfill-diversion programs, utility and resource conservation, greenhouse gas reporting, sustainability performance tracking, employee engagement, and support of biodiversity and sustainable landscaping initiatives. The Sustainability Manager ensures that sustainability improvements are implemented in a manner that supports GMP compliance, employee safety, product quality, environmental requirements, and reliable manufacturing operations. Manage and continuously improve the site's sustainability program, strategy, and annual sustainability improvement initiatives. Develop and implement sustainability programs focused on energy efficiency, water conservation, greenhouse gas reduction, waste minimization, recycling, and environmental stewardship. Track, analyze, and report site performance related to electricity, natural gas, water consumption, waste generation, recycling diversion, and greenhouse gas emissions. Maintain sustainability KPIs, dashboards, scorecards, and routine reporting for site leadership and corporate sustainability teams. Identify opportunities to reduce utility consumption, environmental impact, carbon footprint, and operating costs while supporting business objectives. Conduct and support energy assessments of HVAC systems, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, compressed air systems, process utilities, lighting, and other facility infrastructure. Develop, coordinate, and manage sustainability and energy-efficiency projects from concept through implementation and performance verification. Prepare project justifications, capital requests, cost estimates, utility savings calculations, return-on-investment (ROI) analyses, and project payback evaluations. Partner with Facilities, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Site Services to optimize equipment performance, utility-system efficiency, and resource utilization. Coordinate water stewardship and conservation programs that promote responsible water use and resource sustainability. Lead waste reduction, recycling, landfill-diversion, and circular economy initiatives to improve environmental performance. Collaborate with Procurement and suppliers to support sustainable purchasing practices and environmentally responsible vendor partnerships. Integrate sustainability requirements into capital projects, facility expansions, equipment replacements, and operational improvement initiatives. Identify, pursue, and manage utility rebates, grants, environmental incentives, and other sustainability funding opportunities. Verify project savings, monitor performance results, and maintain records of completed sustainability initiatives. Maintain documentation required for internal reviews, audits, environmental compliance activities, and corporate sustainability reporting. Coordinate sustainability-related data collection and reporting to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with corporate standards. Develop and support employee sustainability awareness, engagement, and training programs that foster a culture of environmental responsibility. Provide regular sustainability updates, project status reports, and long-term improvement recommendations to site leadership and corporate stakeholders. Stay informed of emerging sustainability technologies, industry best practices, regulatory developments, and evolving environmental reporting requirements. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Management, Facilities Management, or a related technical field. 5+ years of experience managing sustainability, energy, environmental, facilities, utilities, engineering, or operational excellence programs within a manufacturing, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, life sciences, or industrial environment. Experience managing sustainability initiatives related to energy efficiency, greenhouse gas reduction, water conservation, waste management, and environmental reporting. Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional projects and influence stakeholders across multiple departments. Experience analyzing utility data, sustainability metrics, and performance trends to support business decisions. Strong financial acumen with experience developing business cases, ROI analyses, and cost-justification models for capital and operational projects. Knowledge of environmental regulations, sustainability reporting standards, greenhouse gas accounting principles, and resource conservation practices. Strong project management, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, data analysis tools, and sustainability reporting platforms. Preferred Qualifications: Professional certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP), Sustainability Excellence Associate (SEA), Certified Environmental Professional (CEP), or equivalent. Experience supporting sustainability programs in GMP-regulated pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or life sciences manufacturing facilities. Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and corporate ESG reporting frameworks. Experience with energy management systems, building automation systems (BAS), utility monitoring platforms, and sustainability data analytics tools. The anticipated salary range for this position in Maryland is $113,025 to $150,700 plus annual bonus, when eligible.
